Merc is part of the “Elements” litter from our main man Silver and a dog named Chicken, who was from Lance Mackey. When I was first getting my Kennel started, I bought a few dogs from Lance Mackey and in the deal, he threw in Chicken. She was a tiny, nine-month old dog that he told me to breed with my big leader Silver. I did just that and have done it four times now, each time getting amazing dogs. All of the dogs out of the Silver and Chicken litter are named after Elements on the periodic table. Merc is the biggest race dog in my Kennel and one that has defied the odds. Weighing in at over 65 pounds, he looks exactly like his dad Silver and holds many of the same traits. It’s awesome to have him on the team because he reminds me so much of his dad. Merc usually ran in the middle of the team but when needed, he has stepped up and been a leader in some of the most critical times in the race. He did just that in the 2015 Yukon Quest and played a key role in getting us to the finish line in the number one spot! Merc was again a superstar in the 2016 K300, Yukon Quest and Iditarod races. He also became a father in 2016 summer with Louise, who gave birth to six healthy pups, all named after characters from the movie Dazed and Confused! He is a lover, just like the rest of his siblings, and his fun, upbeat attitude has been and will continue to be a key element to our success. Now retired, Merc will be an excellent role model for our young dogs – we know he’s got the right attitude and a ton of experience to share with them all!
