Basin was a five-year-old Super Star sled dog who came to Wild and Free at six weeks old. From the first day I saw this little teddy bear, I knew he was a special dog. He was appropriately named after the Copper Basin 300 sled dog race because at six weeks old, he traveled the trail by truck with my dad. As a puppy, Basin spent one winter with the Hey Moose! Kennel along with a few other puppies of mine they helped train while I focused on my Main Race Team. There was no doubt he would shine there and thanks to the great training he received, he quickly became one of my most successful sled dogs. In 2014, he was part of my main team and played a key role in the Yukon Quest race until we were forced to withdraw due to my accident. He also went on to run and finish the Iditarod that year with Squid Acres Kennel. In 2015, his training demonstrated he had what it took to make the Main Race Team and went on to lead the entire championship run in the 2015 Yukon Quest, earning him the Golden Harness Award. Basin was a true captain of the team in every sense of the word and a best friend. He will be remembered most for his endless energy and tremendous love for life. We hope the same love of life will be reflected in his litter of puppies. He will be truly missed.
KEEP ON MUSHING BASIN. SEE YOU ON THE TRAIL.
